A quarter of a century ago the world’s financial markets were reeling. October 19, 1987 – Black Monday as it became known – remains the day on which the world’s major stock markets suffered their biggest crash.

No subsequent crisis, not even the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York in 2001 or the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, triggered a slump on this scale.
